Medicare in the US is health insurance for those 65 or older (You may get it sooner if you have a disability).  Your "Initial Enrollment Period" is a 7-month span, which starts 3 months before you turn 65, and ends 3 months after the month you turn 65 (For instance, if you turn 65 in December of this year, your IEP starts 1 September of this year until 31 March of next year).

There are four parts of Medicare:

  • A: inpatient/hospital coverage

  • B: outpatient/medical coverage

  • C: also known as "Medicare Advantage" offers alternatives for receiving Medicare benefits

  • D: prescription drug coverage

Medicare isn't mandatory, though not signing up for it can have "consequences".  Parts A & B form Medicare's base offerings, while Parts C & D are optional.

Part A coverage (granted timely sign-up) in most cases starts the month you turn 65.  You qualify for premium-free Part A if you/your spouse paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years (i.e. no monthly premiums).  If you don't qualify, you can buy it along with Part B.  If you miss your initial enrollment period you may have to wait to sign up, and/or pay a monthly penalty for Part B for so long as you have Part B coverage.  The longer you wait, the higher the penalty.  You may also have to pay for delays in signing up for Part A.

The above is just a "tip of the iceberg" description of the basics.  Please contact us for a tailored discussion of your case.
